Telegram have so far taken a route music journalists tend to call ‘mysterious’, which means they didn’t put their demos on Soundcloud so the first anyone who hasn’t seen them live has heard of their work is this single, Follow. In fact they’ve come up through an almost old-fashioned route anyway, earning great live notices and the support of tastemakers (Marc Riley, the Manics’ management, bands they’re about to support Bo Ningen, Palma Violets and Temples) They sound like they’ve just stepped out of a late 70s New York club and into the Rollercoaster tour, Dan Carey’s lasers and dry ice-festooned recording style giving it a motorik punch and an array of effects pedal magic not dissimilar to their mates Toy - frankly you could just look at them and assume a connection - but with Matt Saunders’ vocals packing more of a strident punch. Black marker pen them into your Tips For 2014 piece now and beat the rush.
Hey Interwebs… who forgot to tell me that there’s a massive Toy Love reissue in the Captured Tracks / Flying Nun archive series? (I know “Frogs” is also on AK-79, but it’s too good to not share for a Monday morning.)
BlearyEyedBrooklyn’s Unofficial Five Year History of the Captured Tracks Label in Live Performance
What more can I say about the Brooklyn-based record label Captured Tracks except that I love the work these folks do. Since I started archiving performances on BEB in 2010 I have enjoyed many occasions to check out their talented stable of bands live.
This history compiled here in honor of CT5 is a quick look back at some of my favorite moments from those performances. This is in no way a complete list of every band on the label at this five year mark. After all I cover 1,825 days in under six and a half minutes!
I hope you enjoy this look back at five outstanding years of Captured Tracks’ unique vision. I am looking forward to raising a glass this weekend at their CT5 celebration in Brooklyn. I look forward to toasting this milestone and to say thanks for all the amazing music and memories they and their bands have brought to my life.
Signal boost (however limited) as this event is also how I’m spending my weekend. Happy 5th to CT!
